How to access Yahoo! Mail using Mac Mail (for OSX v.10.5 or 10.6)

ID: SLN4746
Refers to: Mail

Description

How to POP mail to Apple's Mac Mail email client

Resolution

Please note: this feature is available only to Mail Plus subscribers. For more information on Mail Plus, please visit this webpage.

Note: Some ISPs (Internet service provider) do not permit message routing through another SMTP server while you are connected to their network. To resolve this problem, replace the SMTP server for the other ISP or the other email account by using the SMTP server that is associated with the ISP that you use to connect to the Internet.

In most cases, Mac Mail can automatically configure your email account settings for Yahoo! Mail with just these three steps:

  1. Open Mac Mail.
  2. Choose Add Account from the File menu. If this is the first time you've opened Mail, you will be automatically prompted to add an account.
  3. Enter your Full Name, email address, and password.

Usually, your email account will be automatically configured at this point. If that doesn't work, you can manually configure POP by following the steps below:

  1. Open your Apple Mail client. If you were not prompted with the "Welcome to Mail" screen, select Mail | Preferences, then click the plus icon on the Accounts tab.
  2. Enter your name, email address and password into the appropriate fields.
  3. Important: Hold the "Option" key down until "Create" turns into "Continue" and then click the Continue button.
  4. Release the "Option" key.
  5. Select POP from the Account Type menu.
  6. In the "Description" field, give your account a useful description, such as "Anne's Yahoo! email account."
  7. Enter "pop.mail.yahoo.com" in the Incoming Mail Server field.
  8. In the "User Name" field, enter your Yahoo! ID.
  9. Please note: your ID is typically your email address without the "@yahoo.com", however, this rule does not apply to "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" addresses. If you have either a "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" address, be sure to enter the entire email address as your ID.
  10. Enter your password.
  11. Important: Hold the "Option" key down until "Create" turns into "Continue" and then click Continue.
  12. Check the "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" option and select "Password" for the Authentication.
  13. Important: Hold the "Option" key down until "Create" turns into "Continue" and then click Continue.
  14. Enter "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" in the Outgoing Mail Server field.
  15. Check "Use Authentication", and then enter your user name and password.
  16. Important: Hold the "Option" key down until "Create" turns into "Continue" and then click the Continue.
  17. Check the "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" option and select Password for the Authentication.
  18. Click Create.
  19. After Mac Mail is launched, select Mail | Preferences, then select the Accounts tab.
  20. Select your Yahoo! Mail account.
  21. Change the Port to 995.
  22. Click the red icon in the top-left corner to confirm and save the changes.

You should be able to retrieve emails from your Yahoo! Mail account now. Once you have completed the steps, we suggest closing Mac Mail and opening it again before sending or receiving messages.
