Searching for email messages

ID: SLN4701
Refers to: Mail

Description

If you're having trouble finding an email message and remember any part of the message, including the sender name, a word in the subject line, text from the message, and sometimes text from an attachment, the Yahoo! Mail search feature can help you find the message.

Resolution
  1. In the Search box at the top of the Yahoo! Mail page, type anything you can remember from the email message.

    Tips:

    • Searches are not case-sensitive; searching for "abc" is the same as searching for "ABC.".
    • You can search for the name of an attached file and for text that's in the content of an attached file (except an image or photo attachment).
    • Use parentheses, ( ), to imply "OR" between terms. For example, searching for (jake john) finds messages with jake or john.
    • Use quotes, " ", to find messages with the exact words in sequence. For example, searching for "birthday party" finds only messages that contain birthday party.
    • Use the minus sign, -, to exclude something from your search. For example, searching for party -birthday finds messages that contain party but not birthday.
    • Use search operators to limit the search. For example, searching for To:John finds all messages addressed to John. You can find a list of search operators in Using advanced search operators to find messages.

  2. Click Search Mail.

    B.   Then click the Search Mail button

All messages matching your search criteria appear in the search results tab. Messages can be from any folder, including the Conversations folder but excluding the Spam folder.

  3. Use the refinement tools on the left to narrow your search to a specific sender, year, attachment type, folder, or status (read or unread).

    Tips:

You can use multiple combinations to refine your search. For example, you can narrow the results by Date and then by a Sender within that date.

How you narrow your search is indicated at the top of the refinement tools. To return to expanded results, click the X to remove a filter.
