There are two ways to block a user from sending you IMs. Please note that if the user is on your Yahoo! Contacts list, you must delete the user from that list first.
Method 1: Block the contact from chat directly in the Chat window
- In a chat window, click the Block Sender button towards the top of the conversation window to block the sender from contacting you.
Note: This option will not appear if the person is a contact in your Yahoo! Contacts list.
Method 2: Block the contact from chat using the Messenger Options menu
- Sign in to Yahoo! Mail.
- Click the gear icon (
) in the upper-right corner of the window, and select Messenger Options from options that appear. The Messenger Options menu appears in a pop-up window. - From the categories on the left, select Privacy.
- Under "Block users in the Block list below...," select the Add button.
- Enter the Yahoo! ID of the person you would like to block. Note: This option will not work if the person is a contact in your Yahoo! Contacts list.
- Select OK.
- Select OK again.
Note: If the person you are trying to block is on your Yahoo! Contacts, you must remove them from your Contacts list first.
To remove a user from your Yahoo! Contacts list:
- Go to Yahoo! Mail.
- Select the Contacts tab.
- Find the contact that you want to remove.
- Select their name.
- Select Delete.
- Select Delete again to confirm removal of contact.

Additional Information
For blocking Chat and Add requests:
- Chat requests: See our help article on Declining unwanted chat requests in Yahoo! Mail.
- Add requests: There's no way to block incoming add requests other than by blocking each user, individually (after you've received the invite).
