Error: Account temporarily blocked from sending messages

This error, which may also appear as "Suspicious Activity," can interrupt your ability to send email. Learn why it happens, how to fix it, and how to prevent it in the future.

What causes the error?

  • If suspicious activity is detected in your account, we may temporarily prevent you from sending emails, though you'll still be able to access your account and receive incoming emails.
  • If you're sure you haven't sent a large number of emails over a short period of time, it's possible somebody else may be using your account to send mail.
  • Using the Yahoo Mail app for Android? Emails can get stuck, and then attempt to send repeatedly from the app's Sent folder, causing this error. Fix it by deleting all messages in your app's Sent folder, then try sending another email.

Fixing the problem

Follow these steps and you should be back to sending email in no time.

  1. Sign out of Yahoo Mail.
  2. Sign back in to Yahoo Mail.

Being asked for a CAPTCHA code?: Enter the code, then learn why you might be asked to provide the code in our "About CAPTCHA word verification" help article.

What if the problem continues?

This error is usually temporary and corrects itself after a few hours. Once a few hours have passed, try sending a plain-text email (without hyperlinks and attachments) to one recipient.

Preventing the error in the future

We know this error can be annoying, so avoid it in the future by not sending emails to a large number of recipients at once, or a large amount of emails over a short period of time.

Regularly send email to the same, large group? Try using Yahoo Groups as an alternative.
