Troubleshooting POP issues with Windows Live Mail
Description
This document provides information on troubleshooting different POP and SMTP issues one may experience in Windows Live Mail such as:
- Messages do not download
- Messages won't send from the email client
- An error is received while sending or downloading messages
Resolution
If you're having problems with POP and SMTP issues in Windows Live Mail, you should:
- Ensure that POP is activated for your Yahoo! Mail account.
- Check your Outlook account settings.
- Review your security software set up (or "configuration").
Instructions for each step are available below.
Step 1: Ensure that POP access is activated
Please ensure that you have selected the option for POP access on the Mail Delivery Status page. To check this:
- Sign in to your Yahoo! Mail account on Web browser.
- Select Options | Mail Options.
- Select POP & Forwarding on the left panel.
- Select the Access Yahoo! Mail via POP radio button. (In Mail Classic, the radio button says Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed.)
- Click Save. (In Mail Classic, click Save Changes.)
Step 2: Check the account settings in Windows Live Mail
Note: Some ISPs do not permit message routing through another SMTP server while you are connected to their network. To resolve this problem, replace the SMTP server for the other ISP or the other email account by using the SMTP server that is associated with the ISP that you use to connect to the Internet.
- Select your Yahoo! Mail account from the left.
- Select the Accounts tab and then click the Properties button.
- In the General tab, ensure that the E-mail address contains your full Yahoo! Mail address.
- Select the Servers tab and verify that the following information matches your settings:
- My incoming mail server: POP3
- Incoming mail (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.com
- Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com
- User Name: Your Yahoo! ID (your address without the "@yahoo.com" or your full address if you have a ymail.com or rocketmail.com domain)
- Password: Your Yahoo! account password
- Check Log on using clear text authentication.
- Check My server requires authentication.
- Click the Settings... button, check Use same settings as my incoming mail server, and click OK.
- Select the Advanced tab and verify that the following information matches your settings:
- Outgoing mail (SMTP): 465
- Check This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Incoming mail (POP3): 995
- Check This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Click OK.
If any of the settings were changed, we suggest closing Windows Live Mail and opening it again before sending or receiving messages.
Step 3: Examine the configuration of your security software
Sometimes, a piece of software security (anti-virus, firewall, or anti-spy) on your PC, a piece of networking equipment (router, bridge, or firewall), or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking access to the Yahoo! Mail POP and/or SMTP servers. Any failure to connect to the Yahoo! POP or SMTP server would normally indicate a network issue.
- Temporarily disable any security software (such as anti-virus, firewall, or anti-spy). Some software security products will actually block the Yahoo! POP or SMTP server or ports. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, please consult with the software vendor's online help or contact their support services directly.
- Check network equipment (such as a router, bridge, or hardware firewall) to see if it is blocking the Yahoo! POP and SMTP servers or ports. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, please consult the product documentation or the manufacturer's support services directly.
- Contact your ISP for assistance. Ask if the modem (if provided by your ISP) or software you are using has a firewall feature. It is also possible that the ISP has certain ports blocked on their end.
