This article explains how you can set up Yahoo! Mail to send and receive email from within Microsoft Outlook Express. It includes information necessary to setup Yahoo! Mail in any popular POP client.

Resolution

To set up your Yahoo! Mail in Outlook Express:

  1. Select Tools | Accounts.
  2. Under Mail tab, select Add | Mail.
  3. In the Display name field, type whatever you want other people to see as your name. Once you're done with the instruction/s on every page, click the Next button.
  4. Type your Yahoo! email address in the E-mail address field (for example, jo.bloggs@yahoo.com).
  5. Complete the following for the "E-mail Server Names" section:
    • My Incoming mail server is a: Select POP3 from the pull-down menu.
    • Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: Type pop.mail.yahoo.com
    • Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: Type smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  6. Do the following for the Internet Mail Logon section:
    • Account Name: Type your Yahoo! ID. Please note: Your ID is typically your email address without the "@yahoo.com"; however, this rule does not apply to "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" addresses. If you have either an "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" address, be sure to enter the entire email address as your ID.
    • Password: Type your Yahoo! password.
    • Check the Remember password checkbox if you don't want Outlook Express to prompt you for your password each time you check your mail.
    • Do not check the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) checkbox.
  7. Click Finish to save your account and exit the wizard.
  8. Under Mail tab, select pop.mail.yahoo.com and then click Properties.
  9. Select Servers tab.
  10. Under "Outgoing Mail Server," check the My server requires authentication checkbox.
  11. Select the Advanced tab and do the following:
    • In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, type 465 for the port number.
    • Under that, check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox.
    • Under Incoming mail (POP3), check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox. The number in the Incoming mail (POP3) field usually changes automatically from 110 to 995. If it doesn’t, type 995 for the port number.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click Close to close Internet Accounts.
  14. Close and restart your Outlook Express.
  15. Click Send/Receive.

Troubleshooting tip:

If you still can’t send Yahoo! Mail from Outlook Express, you might be accessing the Internet through an ISP that is blocking the SMTP port. If this is the case, try using port 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server.

To change the port to 587:

  1. Select ToolsAccounts.
  2. Under Mail tab, select pop.mail.yahoo.com and then click Properties.
  3. Select Advanced tab.
  4. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box, type 587 for the port number.
  5. Click Apply and then click OK.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Close and restart your Outlook Express.
  8. Click Send/Receive.
