What to do if your Email or Yahoo! Groups messages are marked as "Spam"
Description
This article will describe the steps to take if a group member received spam from a group. You can also learn how to set up a filter in Yahoo! Mail to move email messages from your Yahoo! group into designated folder.
Resolution
A user's email client determines what is marked as spam, so if messages from Yahoo! Groups are incorrectly marked as spam, the group member needs to set up email filters that look for Yahoo! Groups emails, then move them to the inbox (or another designated folder).
Because group emails can come from a variety of senders (the group owner email address, the group email address, or the email address of a member of the group), it's important to set up an email filter that accounts for multiple senders. For example, these filters should work for all group group emails:
- If subject contains <groupname>, move to Inbox
- If recipient includes "GROUPNAME@yahoogroups.com," move to Inbox
In both cases, please be sure to replace "GROUPNAME" with your group's name. The first filter should work because all group emails include the group name in brackets in the subject field. The second filter should work because the email is sent to your Yahoo! group's email list address.
Group members should their email client's help pages to learn how to set up a filter. Users of Yahoo! Mail can follow these steps:
- Click Options in the upper right corner of your Mail page and select More Options.
- In the list of links in the left navigation bar, click Filters.
- Click Add, give the filter a name, and choose from a variety of options to automatically direct certain messages into a specific folder. For example, if your group name is "sample_group," you can select to have any messages with subject line containing "[sample_group]" direct to your inbox.
- When you're done, click Add Filter.
The instructions above should address the issues that your group members are reporting.
In addition, members should be advised to mark mislabeled messages as "Not spam," rather than just reading them in your spam folder. Most email clients will either have a button that says "Not spam," or a menu you can access by right-clicking your mouse that has a similar option. This will help your email client identify future group messages as "Not spam."
