How to reset Mozilla Firefox

Description

This document provides steps for resetting Mozilla Firefox on Windows and Mac to its default settings.


Resolution

For a Windows Computer:

  1. Close down Firefox completely; on the "File" menu, select Exit.
  2. If using Windows XP, click Start | select Run
  • if using Windows Vista/7, click Start menu, type "Run" into the search bar, and click Run.
  1. Copy and paste the following text into the "Open" field and press Enter:

    firefox -safe-mode
     
  2. Firefox should start up with a Firefox Safe Mode dialog. Place checkmarks only on the following options:

    "Disable all add-ons"
    "Reset toolbars and controls"
    "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults"
    "Restore default search engines"

    WARNING: Do not place a checkmark on "Reset bookmarks to Firefox defaults." This option will delete your bookmarks.
     
  3. Click Make Changes and Restart button. This will restart the Firefox browser.
  4. Exit the Firefox browser and try to reproduce the problem.
     

On a Macintosh:

  1. Close down Firefox completely; on the menu bar, click Firefox and select Quit Firefox.
  2. Press and hold the “option” key on your keyboard as you restart Firefox.
  3. Firefox should start up with a Firefox Safe Mode dialog. Place checkmarks only on the following options:

    "Disable all add-ons"
    "Reset toolbars and controls"
    "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults"
    "Restore default search engines"

    WARNING: Do not place a checkmark on "Reset bookmarks to Firefox defaults." This option will delete your bookmarks.
     
  4. Click Make Changes and Restart. This will restart the Firefox browser.
  5. Exit the Firefox browser and try to reproduce the problem.
