Updating a symbol that has changed tickers in a portfolio
Description
When a symbol has changed tickers, you may see that its ticker is missing or it's not showing a quote, in a portfolio. Often, ticker symbols that have changed may display messages like the following:
- "No such ticker symbol."
- "Symbol does not exist."
Resolution
When you see that a symbol has changed tickers, you may want to update your portfolio to account for this change.
Note: If a Yahoo! Finance portfolio contains holdings that belong to a delisted ticker that now trades under a different symbol, this will be noted by an asterisk (*) after the actively traded ticker. At the bottom of the portfolio, a footnote provides additional details.
In a transaction portfolio:
The steps involve locating the transactions that you have previously entered for the symbol, then either deleting, changing, or re-entering the transactions so that they reflect the correct symbol. Here's how:
- Open the transaction portfolio.
- Click View transactions.
- Click Filter Transactions.
- From the Display Symbol drop-down, select the original symbol.
- Set a large time frame using the Date Range options to ensure that you capture all transactions for the symbol.
- Leave all Display Types checked.
- Click Filter Transactions.
- The filter results will show all transactions within the date range indicated for the symbol you have selected.
- In the far right "Modify" column for each transaction, you will see either the options to both Edit and Delete, or simply an option to Delete, depending on the way the transactions were originally entered:
- If the column says Edit, click Edit and enter the new symbol you wish to change it to in the "Symbol" field, then click Save.
- If the column only says Delete, you will need to document the details of the transactions in your own records, then click Delete to delete them. You must re-enter them as new transactions with the correct ticker symbols.
Note: Repeat step 9 for all of the transactions for the symbol you wish to change or delete.
In a watchlist portfolio:
- Access the watchlist portfolio.
- Click Add/edit holdings.
- Note the details of the holding in question (share, price paid, etc.) and record this information outside of you portfolio (in a Notepad or Word file, etc.).
- To the right of the ticker (opposite the ticker symbol) click the XYou may have to scroll your browser to the right to see the right-most column..
- On the "Delete Warning" page, click Delete. This will delete the symbol and its corresponding holdings data.
- At the top of the page, enter the new ticker and re-enter the details of this holding (shares, price paid, etc.).
- Click Add Symbol.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.
