Why does Yahoo! require an alternate email address when I create a new account?
Description
Explains why Yahoo! requires an alternate email address during registration of a new Yahoo! account.
Resolution
Yahoo! requires that you have a verified alternate email address for several reasons:
- We use this email address to communicate with you regarding updates to Yahoo! and changes to your account, including password changes and new passwords, if you ever request one.
- We need to verify that your email address is legitimate and that you own it in order to make Yahoo! a more enjoyable and safe place for all of our users.
If you have more than one alternate email address, you can choose to use one email address with one service and another email address with a different service. Set your email preferences within the "Options" section of the specific service you are using.
If you do not want to verify your alternate email address at this time, click Do It Later to get past the screen. The next time you log in to your account, you will be prompted again to verify your email address.
If you prefer not to have to verify your email address, you can activate a Yahoo! Mail address for your Yahoo! account. This ensures that Yahoo! always has a way to communicate with you regarding your account. To activate Yahoo! Mail:
- Go to Yahoo! Mail.
- Sign in with your Yahoo! ID and password.
- Confirm your name as you want it to appear on your outgoing email messages.
Note: Some areas of Yahoo! may still require you to verify an alternate email address, even if you activate your Yahoo! Mail account. We strongly recommend that you have a verified alternate email address for password retrieval purposes.
