How to enable or disable SSL

Resolution

Activating SSL adds an extra layer of security to your account (learn more). While using SSL protection is optional, we recommend it if you are on an unsecured internet connect, such as a wireless network at a cafe.

To turn on or off SSL:

  1. Go to Yahoo! Mail, click the gear icon (Gear Icon) in the upper-right corner of the window, and select Mail Options from the menu that appears.
  2. Click General at the left.
  3. At the bottom of the General menu at the right, check the box next to Turn on SSL, or uncheck it to disable SSL.
  4. Click Save.

Note: Your Internet browser must support SSL in order for it to be used when you visit Yahoo! Mail. Please review our list of supported browsers.

Accessing unsecured content while SSL is on

While SSL is on, it is still possible to access content that is not secured with SSL protection. This is because some content you receive in your email inbox, such as a message with in-line images, is not delivered with SSL encryption.

Depending on your browser type and your browser's settings, you may receive a warning message when opening less secure content. For more information, please see our article on possible browser security warnings.
