Resolution

Please note: this feature is available only to Mail Plus subscribers. For more information on Mail Plus, please visit this webpage.

The following is a list of troubleshooting steps to help you resolve issues while using Yahoo! Mail in Outlook Express. Before trying the troubleshooting steps, you should still be able to send emails from your Yahoo! Web interface without any issues.

This article covers the following:

  • Ensure POP is activated from your Yahoo! account.
  • Confirm that your email server settings are correct.
  • Try alternate POP and SMTP server names.
  • Examine the configuration of your security software.

Ensure that POP access is activated

Please ensure that you have selected the option for POP access on the Mail Delivery Status page. To check this:

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo! Mail account on Web browser.
  2. Select Options | Mail Options.
  3. Select POP & Forwarding on the left panel.
  4. Select the Access Yahoo! Mail via POP radio button. (In Mail Classic, the radio button says Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed.)
  5. Click Save. (In Mail Classic, click Save Changes.)

Confirm your email settings

The following steps will guide you through your Outlook Express profile for Yahoo! Mail to ensure it is configured properly:

Note: Some ISPs do not permit message routing through another SMTP server while you are connected to their network. To resolve this problem, replace the SMTP server for the other ISP or the other email account by using the SMTP server that is associated with the ISP that you use to connect to the Internet.

  1. Select Tools | Accounts.
  2. Under Mail tab, select pop.mail.yahoo.com and then click Properties.
  3. In the General tab, check the following:
    • Fill out the Mail Account field as you see fit, such as "My Yahoo! Mail account."
    • Check to ensure the Name field contains your preferred name that will appear in outbound emails.
    • Check to ensure the E-mail address field contains your Yahoo! Mail address.
  4. Select the Servers tab and check the following:
    • Ensure the My incoming mail server is a field is set to POP3.
    • Check to ensure the Incoming mail (POP3) field contains: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com
    • Check to ensure the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field contains: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • Check to ensure the Account name field contains your Yahoo! ID. Please note: Your ID is typically your email address without the "@yahoo.com"; however, this rule does not apply to "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" addresses. If you have either an "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" address, be sure to enter the entire email address as your ID.
    • Type your password again in the Password field to ensure it is entered properly.
    • Ensure that the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) checkbox is NOT checked.
    • Ensure that the My server requires authentication checkbox is checked.
  5. Click the Settings button.
    • Check to ensure the Use the same settings as my incoming mail server radio button is selected.
    • Click OK.
  6. Select the Advanced tab.
    • Check to ensure the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field is set to: 465
    • Ensure that the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked.
    • Check to ensure the Incoming mail (POP3) field is set to: 995
    • Ensure that the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Close to close Internet Accounts.
  9. Close and restart your Outlook Express.
  10. Click Send/Receive.

Try alternate POP and SMTP server names

If you receive any Authentication issues while using the above server names, you may be able to bypass the issue by using our alternate server names.

To use the alternate server names, use the steps listed above and substitute the following information:

  • For POP server name: pop.mail.yahoo.com
  • For SMTP server name: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Once you have completed the steps, close your Outlook Express again and open it before sending or receiving messages.

Examine the configuration of your security software

Sometimes, a piece of software security (antivirus, firewall, or antispy) on your computer, a piece of networking equipment (router, bridge, or firewall), or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking access to the Yahoo! Mail POP and/or SMTP servers.

Any failure to connect to the Yahoo! POP or SMTP server would normally indicate a network issue.

Try temporarily disabling any security software (such as antivirus, firewall, or antispy) you have installed as some software security products will actually block the Yahoo! POP or SMTP server or ports. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, please consult with the software vendor's online help or contact their support services directly.

If you have any network equipment (such as a router, bridge, or hardware firewall), check to see if it is blocking the Yahoo! POP and SMTP servers or ports. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, please consult the product documentation or the manufacturer's support services directly.

You may also contact your ISP for assistance. Ask if the modem (if provided by your ISP) or software you are using has a firewall feature. It is also possible that the ISP has certain ports blocked on their end.
