How to read Yahoo! Mail using Outlook Express

To set up your Yahoo! Mail in Outlook Express:

  1. Select Tools | Accounts.
  2. Under Mail tab, select Add | Mail.
  3. In the Display name field, type whatever you want other people to see as your name.
  4. Type your Yahoo! email address in the E-mail address field (for example, jo.bloggs@yahoo.com).
  5. Complete the following for the "E-mail Server Names" section:
    • My Incoming mail server is a: Select POP3 from the pull-down menu.
    • Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: Type pop.mail.yahoo.com
    • Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: Type smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  6. Do the following for the Internet Mail Logon section:
    • Account Name: Type your Yahoo! ID. 
    • Password: Type your Yahoo! password.
    • Check the Remember password checkbox if you don't want Outlook Express to prompt you for your password each time you check your mail.
    • Do not check the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) checkbox.
  7. Click Finish to save your account and exit the wizard.
  8. Under Mail tab, select pop.mail.yahoo.com and then click Properties.
  9. Select Servers tab.
  10. Under "Outgoing Mail Server," check the My server requires authentication checkbox.
  11. Select the Advanced tab and do the following:
    • In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, type 465 for the port number and check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox.
      • Alternatively, you can enable SSL/TLS and type 587.
      • It is necessary to enable SSL or TLS for Outgoing SMTP server.
    • Under Incoming mail (POP3), check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox. The number in the Incoming mail (POP3) field usually changes automatically from 110 to 995. If it doesn’t, type 995 for the port number.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click Close.
  14. Close and restart your Outlook Express.
  15. Click Send/Receive.
