Linking to a PDF, Spreadsheet, or Other File

You can post a PDF file, spreadsheet, word-processing document, and other file on your web page by creating a link. When your visitors click the link, they'll be able to open or download the file to their own computers.

Please note: Your visitors will be able to open the file only if they have the software used to create it. For example, to open a PDF file, your visitors must have Adobe Acrobat installed on their computers.

You can add a file to your site in one of two ways.

Create a Text or Image Link

To link text or an image to a file, follow the steps for adding a text link or image link, choosing A File on My Computer in step 1. In step 2, click the Browse... button and locate the file (your PDF, for example) on your computer.

When you click the Create button to add your link, SiteBuilder will scan the contents of your site (your site pages, images, and other files). If the file you choose is not among them, SiteBuilder will ask you if you want to copy the file into your site. Be sure to click OK if you see this message: Links to files that are not part of your web site will not work when your web site visitors click on them.

Drag the File from Your Desktop

You can also add a text link to a file on your site by dragging the file into SiteBuilder from your computer's desktop. You'll first add the file to your site by dragging it to a folder in your Site Contents pane, then add it to a page by dragging the file from Site Contents to your page.

  1. With SiteBuilder open, locate the file on your computer's desktop.
  2. Click once on the file and, holding down your mouse, drag the file onto a folder in your Site Contents pane (shown as small yellow images in the example below) .

  3. Let go of your mouse button to "drop" (add) your file into that folder. This process makes the file part of your web site, so the file will be available when your visitors click on it. When your Site Contents folder is open (click the + symbol next to a folder name to open it), you'll see the name of your file.
  4. Now you can add the file to your web page, again by dragging. First make the sure your page is open in the Design pane. Learn how to open a page.
  5. Click the file name in the Site Contents pane and, holding down your mouse, drag it over your page.
  6. Let go of your mouse button over your page to add a link to your file to the page. Visitors will be able to click this link to open the file.
  7. The text link will display the name of the file by default. To change the text of your new link, click on it once, then enter your new text in step 4 of the Link dialog.
  8. Click Create to save your changes.
