Linking an Image

When you link an image, your site visitors who click on that image will go to the destination you specify. You can create a link to:

  • a page in your site
  • a page in another site
  • an email address (the link will open a blank message with the address you specify in the "To" field)
  • a file in your site
  • another location you specify (advanced users only)

To link an image:

First pick an image on your page and select it by clicking on it once. The image border will change into a thick dotted line.

Click the Link to... button on your toolbar.

This will open the Link dialog, which you'll use to set up your link.

In the first menu of the Link dialog, choose the type of destination for your link (another page, web site, email address, file, or other). For this example, let's select A Page in My Site.

In the second step, enter the actual destination of your link. The destination depends on your choice in step 1.

  • A Page in My Site: Use the menu to choose a page in your site.
  • Another Web Site: Enter the site's web address.
  • An Email Address: Enter the email address, such as you@widgetdesigns.com.
  • A File on My Computer: Click the Browse... button to search for a file, such as a PDF or spreadsheet.
  • Other: Enter another link destination.

For this example, we want to link to another page in your site. In this example we'll choose the page contactus.html, our Contact Us page.

In the third step you can decide how you want the link to behave: When the user clicks the image, the other page (in this case, our Contact Us page) can open in the same browser window or a new one. Let's open the link in the same window: Choose The same browser window.

At the bottom of the dialog, you'll see the image you chose to link. You can click the image now to test your link in a web browser.

When you're ready to activate your link, click Create. (Go ahead and create the link now — you can always edit or remove it later!)
