Why would I disable or deactivate publishing?

After you have activated FrontPage and assigned authors to your root web and subwebs, you can temporarily disable FrontPage publishing or deactivate it entirely.

Disabling FrontPage authoring temporarily shuts down your FrontPage extensions and prevents anyone with access to your subwebs from making changes to your site. You might disable publishing if, for example, you want to ensure that your site remains static while you show it to an important client, or you want to test the links and pages of your live web site without encountering any late-breaking changes. We recommend that you deactivate your site or subwebs only if you're certain you no longer want to publish your site or subweb using FrontPage. Deactivation deletes FrontPage extensions from your account, and although your site pages and content will be preserved, certain functionality in those pages may fail. You will be able to reactivate FrontPage later if you change your mind; however, we strongly suggest that you consider any potential disruption to your site when you prepare to deactivate FrontPage.
