Receiving a Yahoo! Phone In Call

Yahoo! Phone In is a premium Yahoo! Messenger feature that allows your friends to call your PC from a regular phone or a mobile phone.

Tips:

Before you answer a call, use the Call Setup Assistant, as described in the Introducing Yahoo! Messenger’s Call Features tutorial, to be sure that your microphone and speakers are set up properly.

The Yahoo! Phone In service isn’t available when conversing with Windows Live™ Messenger contacts.

Here’s How

  1. If you’re signed in to Yahoo! Messenger and a friend calls your computer from his or her phone, you’ll see a pop-up notification of the call on your computer screen.

A pop-up notification of an incoming call.

  2. Respond by clicking one of the buttons:

    • Accept: the connection is made, and you can begin talking just like you do on the telephone.

    • Decline: the caller has the option of leaving you voicemail, which you can listen to at your convenience.

If you don’t choose either of the available responses within about 20 seconds, the caller has the option of leaving you a voicemail message.

  3. If you accept the call, the Call window opens and begins timing the length of the conversation.

The Call window begins timing the length of the call.

  4. To end the call, click the End call button.

    Click the End call button.

What’s Next

Tips: The Call notification window provides some useful information and features:

A pop-up notification of an incoming call.

Yahoo! Voice supports caller ID, so the notification displays the phone number of the person calling you. If the person has a Yahoo! ID, the ID displays as well, even if the person isn’t in your Yahoo! Address Book.

Your phone number—the one attached to your ID—displays in the title bar. This information is useful if you want to know which of your many Phone In numbers the person is calling.

Check Mute Ringtones to turn off the ringing on your computer. This also unchecks the Play a ringtone when I receive a call option in the Calling & Audio category of the Preferences window.

If you aren’t signed in at the time of the call, the caller can leave you a voice message, and you can listen to it the next time you sign in to Messenger. You never have to miss a call. To learn more, take a look at the Working With Voice Messaging & Call History tutorial.
