When You're Put on Hold

At any time during a Messenger call, either party can put the call on hold by clicking the Hold button.

Click the Hold button to put the call on hold.

Here's How

  1. If the person you're talking with puts you on hold, the IM window changes to show your "on hold" status and a notification appears in the conversation pane. Although you are still connected to the other person, you can't hear each other.

The call status indicator changes to show that you've been put on hold.

  2. After someone puts you on hold, you have several options:

    • You can wait for the other person to resume the call, which returns the call display to normal.

      The call has resumed.

    • You can terminate the call by clicking the End Call button.

Click the End Call button to terminate the call.

    • You can put the other person on hold by clicking the Hold button.

Click the Hold button to put the other person on hold.

Your Hold button changes to a Resume button and a "reciprocal hold" message appears in the conversation window.

The inline notification shows that both your and your friend have put each other on hold.

  3. If you put on hold someone who has already put you on hold, you must click the Resume button to release your hold before the other person can also resume the conversation.

Click the Resume button to release the hold.

What's Next

When both parties have resumed their ends of the conversation, you can begin talking again.
