Internet Explorer (Windows)

If you use a Windows computer, your Internet Explorer browser can double as an FTP tool!

Here we'll show you how to set up Internet Explorer versions 5 and above to use FTP. (If you're using Internet Explorer 7, please see our special instructions below.) Please note that FTP features are not available in Internet Explorer for the Macintosh.

To start using Internet Explorer with your GeoCities account, you'll need your unique FTP settings, which you can find on the Create & Update and Manage tabs of your GeoCities Control Panel.

To connect to your account:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.

  2. In the address field, enter ftp:// and then your FTP host, like this: ftp://ftp.learn2yoga.com or ftp://ftp.geocities.com.

  3. Click the "Go" button.

  4. You may see a dialog asking you to enter your user name and password. If you do not see this dialog, click the "File" menu in the upper-left corner of the window and select "Login As..."

  5. In the "User name" field of the "Log On As" dialog, enter your FTP user ID. If you have a GeoCities Pro plan, your user ID is a combination of your Yahoo! ID and your domain, such as name@learn2yoga.com (replace name with your Yahoo! ID, and learn2yoga.com with your own domain name). If you use GeoCities Plus, enter your Yahoo! ID here.
  6. Enter your Yahoo! password in the "Password" field.

  7. Click "Log On."

When you successfully connect, the window will display the files and folders in your GeoCities account! (Learn how to troubleshoot connection problems.)

You can view, rename, delete, and organize files in your account exactly as you'd work with files on your computer. To transfer a file to your account, just locate the file on your computer and drag it into the Explorer window. Learn more about transferring files.

Internet Explorer 7 Users
Microsoft changed a few things in its latest release of the Internet Explorer browser. You'll just need to complete one additional step to set up your FTP connection.

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above. In step 3, you will not see a user name and password dialog.
  2. Click the "File" menu, then "Open FTP in Explorer."
  3. Click the "File" menu again, then "Login As..."
  4. Continue setting up your connection from step 4 above.
