How do I set up a guestbook on my site?

You can easily set up a guestbook on your site in just a few steps. When you're finished specifying the look and behavior of your guestbook, you'll generate a bit HTML code that you can then add to one of your pages. Learn how to add HTML to your page.

To create a guestbook:

  1. Go to the Create & Update tab of your GeoCities Control Panel and click the "Add-Ons" link.

  2. Under "Visitor Feedback Tools," choose "Guestbook."

  3. Choose the "Guestbook Setup" link in the upper-left side of the page to get started.

  4. In step 1, enter a name for your guestbook. Feel free to use the default name (such as "Bob's Guestbook").

  5. In step 2, choose the colors, font, and background image for your guestbook display. To choose a color, click one of the boxes in the color palette. To add a background image, enter the web address of an image in your File Manager (for example, if you have already uploaded an image file called sample.gif to your main directory, you could enter http://www.widgetdesigns.com/sample.gif here).

  6. Enter an introduction to your guestbook in step 3. Your site visitors will see this introduction when they arrive at your guestbook page (feel free to edit the default introduction).

  7. In step 4, enter any questions or labels for fields you would like your visitors to fill in when they make an entry in your guestbook, such as "Name," "Web Address" or "URL," and "Comment."

  8. Also in step 4, choose an entry style for each field. Choose "Text Entry" for fields that require short, one-line answers, such as "Name." Select "Comment Box" next to fields that allow longer, multiline entries, such as "Comment."

  9. In step 5, choose text for the button your visitors will use to submit their comments, such as "Submit" or "Sign My Guestbook."

  10. Choose the number of guestbook entries you'd like to display on a single page in step 6. The more entries you choose, the longer the page will be.

  11. Under "Entry Separator," choose the image you'd like to use to demarcate unique guestbook entries. You can use your own image by choosing the last radio button and entering the full web address of an image in your File Manager.

  12. In step 7, choose the link that will appear on your confirmation page to refer your site visitors to another part of your site when they're finished entering comments into your guestbook. Choose "Return Page" if you want to send your visitors to a specific page, then enter the web address of that page in the corresponding text field. (By default this web field will designate your home page as the destination page.) If you'd rather return your visitors to the page on your site that referred them to the guestbook, choose "Link to Refer Page."

  13. If you would like to receive an email when someone signs your guestbook, select the first checkbox in step 8, "Send notification email." If you would like to review all guestbook entries before they're posted on your site, choose the corresponding option.

  14. Under "Privacy Options," choose whether to make your guestbook public or private. If you make your guestbook public, your site visitors will be able to review entries in your guestbook.

  15. Click the "Preview" button to review your work. You'll be able to return to edit your choices anytime.

  16. When you're satisfied with your work, choose the "Finished" button.

  17. You'll arrive on a page that confirms your changes. Click the web address provided on this page to view your guestbook.

  18. Select the HTML code from the text box under step 1.

  19. Once you have copied the HTML code, you can add it to the web page in which you'd like the guestbook to appear. Learn how to add HTML to your page.
