What does it mean to disable publishing?

Disabling publishing temporarily suspends all FrontPage authoring in your site. If you disable publishing, neither you nor any of the authors to whom you've assigned access will be able to modify files in your root web or subwebs until you restore publishing privileges. Your site contents, subwebs, and assigned authors will be otherwise unaffected.

Learn how to disable all FrontPage publishing in your site.

To disable publishing in an individual subweb, we recommend unassigning all authors in that subweb. When you're ready to restore publishing privileges in that directory, you can return to the subweb and reassign the appropriate authors. Learn how.

If you'd like to permanently eliminate FrontPage authoring in your site, you may want to deactivate FrontPage publishing instead. Learn more.
