Searching the BT Yahoo! Search Directory

You can search the BT Yahoo! Search Directory using Directory search. The Directory—created and maintained by Yahoo!—is a library of web sites organised into categories and subcategories. Your search results will contain a list of categories and sites found in the directory.

Because Yahoo! editors build synonyms, cross-references, and relationships between subjects into the Directory's categorisation, you may find searching the BT Yahoo! Search Directory particularly helpful when you're not sure how to describe what you want, if you're searching for words with multiple meanings, or if you want a better understanding of the subject that you're searching for. Consider these examples:

  • Do you have an interest in flying? You might search for "flying" to learn about the sport. Your results will include sites from the related Directory category: Aviation > Mountain Flying.

You can browse this list of sites and subcategories, or search for "flying" just within Aviation, rather than on the entire Web. This guarantees your results won't refer to another kind of flying, such as "The Flying Nun" or flying discs.

  • Search the Directory for "bugs" and you'll see Insects. In this category, you'll find listings for individual creatures from antlions to wasps, along with such topics as entomophagy (insects as food) and pest management. Web search results for "bugs" alone will give you a much narrower view.

You can further your knowledge of almost any subject using our rich categories with extensive links to related information.

The directory search results page provides links to web sites that contain the words you've searched for. A directory search results page includes the following:

    • Related directory categories—shown at the top of the first results page. These are suggested categories that might also pertain to the type of information you are looking for. When you click a category, the BT Yahoo! Search Directory displays the web site listings for that category.

    • Sponsored search results—shown as web sites with a blue background. The owners of these web sites have paid to have their sites appear at the top or bottom of a results page.

    • Web search results—shown as web sites with a white background. These web sites, found in the BT Yahoo! Search Directory, appear in the order in which they relate to your search text, with the most relevant appearing at the top. The category information included with each search result reflects the Directory's categorisation and organisation.

Tip: If you want to narrow the results to the UK or Ireland, select UK only or Ireland only below the search box, then click the Search button. BT Yahoo! Search updates the results to show web sites for the selected country only.
