Personalising BT Yahoo! Messenger

Specifying Message Preferences Changing the Skin Controlling Alerts and Sounds

Specifying Message Preferences

You can change the way BT Yahoo! Messenger behaves when you receive an instant message, whether it’s from one of your contacts or someone who isn’t on your Messenger List. You can also specify the response of pressing the Enter key in an instant message.

Receiving a Message From a Contact

When you receive a message from one of your contacts, the message displays in an IM window. Initially, BT Yahoo! Messenger pops the IM window to the top of the screen. You can change this behaviour and have BT Yahoo! Messenger minimise the IM window to the task bar, where it will blink to get your attention.

Receiving a Message From Someone not on Your Messenger List

When you receive a message from someone who isn’t on your Messenger List, BT Yahoo! Messenger initially displays the message in the IM window with a notification telling you that this person isn’t on your list. You can change this behaviour and have all messages from unknown people display in one window. Both approaches give you the option of adding the person to your Messenger List, putting the person on your Ignore List, or replying to the message. If the message displays in a separate IM window, you can also report this person as a spammer.

Using the Enter Key in an Instant Message

You can change how the IM window behaves when you press the Enter key while typing an instant message. Initially, BT Yahoo! Messenger sends the message to your contact. You can change this behaviour so that pressing the Enter key includes a carriage return in your message. When you do this, you must click the Send button to send the message.

Make these changes in the Messenger Preferences window.

Here’s How

  1. Open the Messenger Preferences window by selecting Preferences from the Messenger menu in your Messenger window or from the Conversation menu in your IM window.

  2. In the Preferences window, select the Messages category.

  3. Make the desired changes on the right side of the Preferences window.

    Make your desired changes.

  4. Click the OK button.

BT Yahoo! Messenger begins using your new settings.
