Addressing Your Message

Just as you address a letter that you send through the post office, you address email messages so that BT Yahoo! Mail knows where to send them. Do this by entering one or more email addresses in the To field of the Compose page. An email address looks something like this: name@yahoo.com. It includes a contact’s email name, followed by the @ sign, followed by the contact’s email domain. (The email domain for BT Yahoo! Mail users is "yahoo.com".)

For BT Yahoo! Mail to send your message, the To field must contain at least one address. You can also send copies of your message to other contacts by entering their addresses in the Cc (carbon copy) field. Everyone who receives your message can see the addresses in the To and Cc fields.

To send a copy of your message to someone without revealing that person’s email address to the other recipients, enter the contact’s name in the Bcc (blind carbon copy) field.

The Compose page also includes a From field, which shows the recipients who sent the message and what email address will be used if a recipient replies to the message. If you have multiple email addresses associated with your BT Yahoo! Mail account, you can choose the return email address your contacts see for each message.

Tips:

The Accessing (Popping) Non-BT Yahoo! Mail tutorial explains how to associate other email accounts and their addresses with your BT Yahoo! Mail account.

The Using Disposable Addresses tutorial explains how to create and use disposable email addresses, including using them in the From field as alternative return addresses for your messages.

Here’s How

  1. Open the Compose page. (Remind me how.)

  2. In the From field, keep the return address automatically filled in by BT Yahoo! Mail, or select a return email address from the drop-down list.

    Select a return address.

  3. In the To field, enter one or more email addresses, separating multiple addresses with a comma or semicolon (A space between addresses is optional.)

Enter email addresses in the To field.

  4. If you want to send copies or blind copes to contacts, click the Add CC and Add BCC links to display these address fields.

Click the Add CC and Add BCC links.

Then enter email addresses in the displayed fields, just as you do in the To field.

Enter email addresses in the Cc and Bcc fields.

  5. If your BT Yahoo! Address Book contains email addresses, you can also use one of these approaches for entering addresses in the recipient fields:

    • Use a distribution list in any of the address fields not including the From field. In BT Yahoo! Mail, a distribution list is called a category. A category contains multiple email addresses and allows you to send one email to many people without having to type all of the email addresses. Unlike distribution lists, you can also use categories as a way to organize the contacts in your Address Book. To learn how to create categories, see the Working With Categories tutorial. The Working With Categories tutorial shows you how to use categories.

    • Click the Insert addresses link, the To: link, the Cc: link, or the Bcc: link.

Click Insert addresses, To, Cc, or Bcc to open the Address Book window.

      The Address Book window opens.

In the Address Book window, check the To, Cc, or Bcc boxes next to the contacts you want to include. If a contact doesn’t have an email address, these boxes are disabled.

Check the boxes next to the desired contacts.

Then click the Insert Checked Contacts button.

Click the Insert Checked Contacts button.

BT Yahoo! Mail adds the email addresses that you selected to the address fields in the Compose page.

Tip: You don’t need to display the Cc and Bcc fields before you insert addresses from your Address Book. Simply checking the boxes in the Address Book window causes the fields and the selected addresses to display in the Compose page.

    • Begin typing your contact’s name, nickname, or email address in any of the address fields.

BT Yahoo! Mail’s Address AutoComplete feature displays a list of email addresses from your Address Book that match what you’ve typed so far. Select the address you want from the list or continue typing to enter a new address.

Select an address from the drop-down list.

The email address displays in the address field.

Tip: Address AutoComplete may not work in all browsers. For more information, see the Address Book Help in the Help Topics listed below.

What’s Next

In your Address Book tab, you can click a contact’s email address to open the Compose page and automatically display the contact’s address in the To field.

In your Address Book, click the email link to open the Compose page.

You can also click the box next to one or more contact names, and then click the Send Mail button to open the Compose page and display all of the selected contact email addresses in the To field.

Click the box next to a name, then click the Send Mail button.

Now that you’ve addressed your email, you’re ready to write your message.

Tip: The order in which you compose your email message is your choice. You can address it, and then write your message, write your message, and then address it, or even mix it up. Just be sure to have an email address in the To field before you click the Send button.
