Working With Messages

A big change that you’ll notice in the new BT Yahoo! Mail is how you work with email messages. Reading email, composing messages, and managing your mailbox are all a bit different in BT Yahoo! Mail.

Reading Email

With the new BT Yahoo! Mail, you can view both the list of messages in your Inbox or other mail folder and a specific message at the same time. Just click the message you want to see—it displays in the Reading Pane located below the list of messages.

To view a message on a separate tab, rather that in the Reading Pane, double-click the message in the message list. BT Yahoo! Mail lets you open multiple messages at one time, each on a separate tab. You can easily switch from one message to another by selecting a different tab.

Composing Messages

To compose a new email message in BT Yahoo! Mail, just type n (a keyboard shortcut) or click the New button (New button). You get a new tab—the new message tab—for preparing your message. (This happens when you reply to or forward messages, too.)

Tabs allow you to have other messages open while you compose a message on its own tab.Enlarge

With the new message tab, you can write your message on one tab while keeping a mail folder and other email messages open and available. You can even compose multiple messages at once, each one on its own tab!

For more information on sending email in BT Yahoo! Mail, see the Composing and Sending Email Messages tutorial.

Managing Messages

Managing email messages is really easy in BT Yahoo! Mail—just click a message or the check box in front of it to select it. You can select multiple messages by choosing more than one check box. Once you’ve selected a message—or several messages—you can act on them in various ways:

  • Click an action button (for example, Reply or Delete).
  • Select a menu item (for example, More Actions > Mark as Read).
  • Type a shortcut key (for example, r to reply or Delete to delete).

With a message selected, you can click an action button, choose a menu option, or type a shortcut key.Enlarge

Moving messages from one folder to another is really easy, too. Just select messages in one folder and then drag and drop them into another one.

Drag and drop a message into another folder.

Tip: Another way to select more than one message to move, delete, flag, or whatever, is to hold down the Shift key or Ctrl key and clicking. Holding down the Ctrl key lets you select multiple individual messages. Holding down the Shift key lets you select the series of all messages between the first and second ones you click.
