Addressing Your Message

You address a BT Yahoo! Mail message by including one or more email addresses in the To box of the new email message tab. An email address looks something like this:

name@btinternet.com

It includes a contact’s email name, followed by the at sign (@) and the contact’s email domain.

You can also choose the return email address your contacts see when they read your message by selecting one of your email addresses in the From box.

Tips:

The Accessing (Popping) Non-BT Yahoo! Mail tutorial explains how to associate other email accounts and their addresses with your BT Yahoo! Mail account.

The Using Disposable Addresses tutorial explains how to create and use disposable email addresses, including using them in the From box as alternative return addresses.

Here’s How

To specify who the message is from:

  1. In the From box of the new email message tab, keep the return address that BT Yahoo! Mail automatically filled in, or select a different return email address from the pull-down menu.

Select an address from the pull-down menu.

The From box only appears if you’ve set up your Mail account to send email using a different email address (see the Accessing (Popping) Non-BT Yahoo! Mail tutorial), or if you’ve created one or more disposable email addresses. (Learn more in the Using Disposable Addresses tutorial.)

Tip: Want to change the personal name that gets sent with your message? The Customising BT Yahoo! Mail tutorial tells you how.

To address a message to the main recipients:

Use the To box for the addresses of the main people to receive your message. The To box must always contain at least one address; everyone who receives your message can see the addresses in the To box. You can enter one or more email addresses in the To box using any of the following methods:

  1. Method 1: Type one or more email addresses, separating them with commas or semicolons. (Spaces between addresses are optional.)

Type email addresses in the To: box.

Tip: If the address you’re typing matches one or more addresses in your BT Yahoo! Contacts, the list of matching addresses appears as a pop-up; you can click any address in the list to select it. (This autocomplete feature may not work in all browsers.)

Address pop-up menu for the To: box

If you want to enter an address that isn’t on the pop-up list, continue typing it.

  2. Method 2: Type the name of a distribution list in the To: box.

Enter the name of a list

A distribution list contains multiple email addresses and allows you to send one message to many people without having to type all of the email addresses. Learn more about creating and using distribution lists in the Working with Lists task.

Tips: You can combine individual addresses and list names in the To box—no problem. Just separate them with commas or semicolons.

When you send an email message addressed to a list, the list name expands to the names and email addresses of all the members of this list. This means that everyone who receives the message can see the addresses of the other list members. If you want to avoid this, include the list in the address box instead of the To box.

  3. Method 3: Select one or more contacts (including lists) from your Address Book:

    • Click the To: button.

      Click the To: button.

      The Add Recipients window opens.

      Add Recipients Window

    • Select the contact or contacts you want to include, then click the OK button.

      Tips for selecting multiple contacts:

To select a group of consecutive contacts in the last, select the first contact, hold down the Shift key and select the last contact.

To select multiple contacts that aren’t together in the list, hold down the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Apple key (Mac) and select individual contacts.

BT Yahoo! Mail adds the selected addresses to the To box.

To send a copy of the message to other recipients:

Use the Cc (carbon copy) box for the addresses of people you want to copy on your message. Everyone who receives your message can also see the addresses in the Cc box. If someone responds to your message using "reply to all", the carbon-copied recipients also get the response.

Enter email addresses in the Cc box.

All of the methods for entering addresses in the To box also work for the Cc box. (Remind me how.)

To send the message to undisclosed (hidden) recipients:

If you want to send a copy of a message to people without revealing their email addresses to the other recipients, use the Bcc (blind carbon copy) box. Addresses listed in the Bcc box are invisible to all recipients and won’t receive replies sent to this message.

Don’t forget that you always have to include at least one address in the To box for BT Yahoo! Mail to send the message, so use an address there that you don’t mind showing to all recipients (like your own address).

  1. Click the Show BCC link found to the right of the To box.

    Click the Show BCC link.

This adds the Bcc box to the address area.

  2. Enter one or more email addresses in the Bcc box using any of the methods described for the To box. (Remind me how.)

Enter one or more addresses in the Bcc box.

What’s Next: Sending an Email From Your Contacts List

If you’re viewing your Contacts list, you can send an email to one or more contacts by selecting the names, right-clicking, and then selecting Send Email from the menu.

Select one or more contacts, right click, then select Send Email from the menu.
