The Category field is used to find businesses of a particular type. Enter a business category here to search for all businesses of that type. You can also click on the Browse or Category Browser link to select a category from a hierarchy that includes over 800 categories. The business categories are mainly the Standard Industrial Classifications (SICs) developed by the U.S. government. Some categories found in the printed Yellow Pages are also used.
Tips for using the Category field:
- Enter a word related to the type of business you're interested in, for example florists. The service will return a list of all categories that match the word, for example Florists-Retail and Florist Supplies. You can then select from the list of matching categories to display the individual business listings.
- You can browse through a list of the most common categories by clicking on the Browse or Browse Categories link on the search form.
- If you get too many matching categories, try your search again using a more specific word. For example, if automobile matches too many categories, use a more specific word, such as radiator. You could also try using multiple words separated by spaces, such as automobile radiator.
- If you get No Matches with the category you're using, try using the wild card character * to find similar terms. For example, elec* will match categories including such words as electrical, electronic, and electrician (among others).
- If you still get No Matches, try searching for a specific business that you know is similar to the type of business you're looking for. Type the business name into the Business Name field and see what category that business is listed under.
