Unfortunately, MLB is not crediting Downs with a Hold because he did not qualify.
Here is why:
A relief pitcher is credited with a hold any time
he enters a game in a save situation. Since Downs did not enter the game in Save situation because there was already one out in the inning. In order to qualify for a Save, the relief pitcher must enter the game with a lead of no more than three runs
and pitches for at least one inning.
Downs did not have an option to pitch a full inning because there was already one out in the inning.
This was an odd play, but please note that Yahoo! does not make calls on official scoring plays. We get our data from official MLB stats. Unless the MLB changes the stats for Downs, we will not be crediting Downs with a Hold.
